Target Information
ALAS2 encodes an erythroid-specific mitochondrial enzyme that catalyzes the first step in the heme biosynthetic pathway. Defects in this gene cause X-linked pyridoxine-responsive sideroblastic anemia. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
