Target Information
The Na⁺/H⁺ antiporter (Nhe-1) is a membrane-bound enzyme involved in pH regulation of vertebrate cells. It is inhibited by amiloride and activated by various signals such as growth factors, mitogens, neurotransmitters, and tumor promoters.
Nhe-1 also functions as an anchor for actin filaments, maintaining cortical cytoskeleton integrity through interaction with ERM proteins (ezrin, radixin, moesin).
This structural role is independent of its ion exchange function and may be associated with hypertension.
At least two isoforms of Nhe-1 are known to exist.
