Target Information
Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme that catalyzes the rapid interconversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbonic acid, protons, and bicarbonate ions. It is abundant in all mammalian tissues.
CA IX is one of the most inducible genes under hypoxia, regulated by HIF-1 alpha, and is localized within the membrane.
Carbonic anhydrases play a crucial role in pH regulation by controlling hydrogen ion flux. Inhibition of CA IX can increase cell death under hypoxic conditions, making it a reliable histochemical marker of hypoxia.
