CD21은 C3 보체 조각, 특히 활성화 표면이나 항원에 결합된 분해 조각을 인식합니다.
이 단백질은 면역복합체의 흡수 및 유지, 기억 B 세포의 생존, T-의존 항원에 대한 체액성 면역 반응의 발달과 유지에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
또한 Epstein-Barr 바이러스(EBV)의 주요 수용체로 작용하며, 프리온을 여포 수지상세포로 전달하여 말초 노출 후 신경 침투를 촉진합니다.
CD21은 C3d, C3dg, iC3b, EBV, IFNα에 결합하며, CD23과 결합하고 CD19, CD81, Leu13과 함께 B 세포 활성화에 관여하는 신호전달 복합체를 형성합니다.
CD21 유전자 변이는 전신홍반루푸스 9형(SLEB9) 감수성과 관련이 있습니다.
대체 스플라이싱된 전사체 변이체들은 서로 다른 아이소폼을 암호화합니다.
