Target Information
BMI1 is a component of the Polycomb group (PcG) multiprotein PRC1 complex, which maintains transcriptional repression of genes such as Hox throughout development.
The PRC1 complex mediates chromatin remodeling and histone modification, specifically monoubiquitination of histone H2A at Lys-119, resulting in heritable changes in gene expression.
Within the PRC1 complex, BMI1 is required to stimulate the E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase activity of RNF2/RING2.
