Target Information
Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) is expressed only during embryogenesis and is crucial for early developmental patterning. It plays key roles in:
- Ventral neural tube and limb axis formation
- Somite patterning
- Cholesterol modification of N-terminal product for membrane localization
Defects in SHH or its pathway can lead to holoprosencephaly (HPE) and are associated with VACTERL syndrome, characterized by various congenital malformations.
