Target Information

Mammalian apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease (APE/ref-1) is a multifunctional enzyme involved in DNA repair and redox regulation of various transcription factors such as Fos, Jun, NF-kB, Myb, HIF-1α, CREB, Pax, and p53.
APE repairs abasic sites in DNA caused by spontaneous loss or oxidative damage, chemotherapy, ionizing radiation, UV irradiation, and removal of modified bases by DNA glycosylases.
Expression levels vary across tissues and developmental stages, and its localization suggests interactions with multiple cellular proteins beyond nuclear DNA repair.
Phosphorylation-mediated regulation by casein kinase II has been reported. Increased APE levels are observed upon reoxygenation of hypoxic cells and in some malignant tissues, while decreased expression is associated with apoptosis induction.
