Smooth Muscle Actin belongs to the actin family of proteins, which are highly conserved and play essential roles in cell motility, structure, and integrity.
Alpha, beta, and gamma actin isoforms have been identified:

• Alpha actin: Major component of the contractile apparatus
• Beta and gamma actins: Involved in cell motility regulation

Smooth muscle actin (alpha actin) is found in skeletal muscle and forms a significant part of the cytoskeleton, interacting with myosin for muscle contraction and cell motility. It is expressed in smooth muscle vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells of the breast and salivary glands.

Defects in the smooth muscle actin gene can cause aortic aneurysm familial thoracic type 6. Alpha-smooth muscle actin is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and can appear in fibroblastic stress fibers during wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases. Multiple alternatively spliced variants have been identified.
