Target Information
Sphingosine Kinase 2 (Sphk2) catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingosine to sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P), a key signaling molecule with intra- and extracellular roles. Inside the cell, S1P functions similarly to other sphingolipid metabolites such as ceramide and sphingosine. It is involved in regulating cell differentiation, calcium mobilization, and apoptosis.
S1P receptors belong to the EDG family of G protein-coupled receptors (S1P Receptors). These receptors interact with multiple G proteins (e.g., S1P1 with Gi, S1P2 and S1P3 with Gq, G13, and Gi), influencing processes such as cell motility, survival, apoptosis, migration, and cell–cell interactions. S1P also plays crucial roles in cardiogenesis, vascular maturation, oocyte survival, immune cell trafficking, and neural and bone cell regulation. S1P levels are controlled by the activity of Sphk enzymes (Sphk1 and Sphk2).
