Target Information
CYP2A6 encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These monooxygenases catalyze reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. The protein localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and its expression is induced by phenobarbital. CYP2A6 hydroxylates coumarin and metabolizes nicotine, aflatoxin B1, nitrosamines, and certain pharmaceuticals. Individuals with specific allelic variants may exhibit poor metabolizer phenotypes. The gene is part of a large cluster of cytochrome P450 genes (CYP2A, CYP2B, CYP2F) on chromosome 19q and was formerly referred to as CYP2A3.
