Target Information
Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) are enzymes that remove phosphate groups from phosphorylated tyrosine residues on proteins. Along with tyrosine kinases, PTPs regulate the phosphorylation states of many signaling molecules, such as the MAP kinase family.
Dual specificity phosphatases (DSPs) are a subclass of the PTP family, capable of dephosphorylating phosphothreonine and phosphotyrosine residues. The VH1 gene in vaccinia virus serves as a prototypical DSP, with a shallow active site pocket allowing hydrolysis of phosphorylated serine, threonine, or tyrosine residues.
