COL17A1은 type XVII collagen의 알파 사슬로, 대부분의 콜라겐과 달리 막관통 단백질이며, 진피-표피 기저막대의 hemidesmosome 복합체에서 각질세포의 부착을 매개하는 구조적 구성요소입니다. FACIT collagen 계열에 속하며, type I collagen이 포함된 조직에 위치하여 세포외기질의 구조적 안정성을 유지하는 역할을 합니다. COL17A1 기능 이상은 epithelial recurrent erosion dystrophy 및 epidermolysis bullosa와 관련이 있습니다.
