TMPRSS2는 세린 프로테아제 계열에 속하는 단백질로, type II transmembrane domain, receptor class A domain, scavenger receptor cysteine-rich domain 및 protease domain을 포함합니다. 세린 프로테아제는 다양한 생리적 및 병리적 과정에 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. TMPRSS2 유전자는 전립선암 세포에서 안드로겐 호르몬에 의해 발현이 증가하며, 안드로겐 비의존성 전립선암 조직에서는 감소하는 것으로 보고되었습니다. 이 단백질의 프로테아제 도메인은 자가 절단 후 세포 배지로 분비되는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
