Target Information
Mammalian cells contain four distinct ligase proteins. These DNA ligases are essential for joining DNA strand breaks that occur during replication, repair, and recombination.
The DNA Ligase III gene product appears as a 100 kDa (α-form) protein in somatic tissues, is ubiquitously expressed, and forms complexes with XRCC-1.
A 97 kDa (β-form) variant is found in testis. DNA Ligase III functions in rejoining DNA single-strand breaks and participates in the base excision repair pathway.
