Target Information
USP7 (also known as HAUSP) is a ubiquitin-specific protease that removes ubiquitin from its substrates. Ubiquitylation is linked to protein stability and degradation; thus, HAUSP activity stabilizes substrate proteins. It acts as an antagonist of Mdm2, the E3 ubiquitin ligase for p53, thereby protecting p53 from degradation. This mechanism suggests a potential tumor suppressor role for HAUSP through p53 stabilization. Additionally, HAUSP may provide an alternative pathway for protecting cells from oncogenic stress, independent of the p19ARF pathway.
