Target Information

Nucleocytoplasmic transport is a signal- and energy-dependent process occurring through nuclear pore complexes in the nuclear envelope. Proteins containing a nuclear localization signal (NLS) require the NLS import receptor, a heterodimer of importin alpha and beta subunits (karyopherins). Importin alpha binds NLS-containing cargo in the cytoplasm, while importin beta docks the complex at the nuclear pore. In the presence of nucleoside triphosphates and Ran GTPase, the complex translocates into the nucleus, where importin alpha enters with its cargo and importin beta remains at the pore. Interactions between importin beta and FG repeats of nucleoporins are essential for translocation. The IPO5 gene encodes a member of the importin beta family.
