Target Information

Natural killer (NK) cells are lymphocytes that can mediate lysis of certain tumor cells and virus-infected cells without previous activation. They also regulate specific humoral and cell-mediated immunity.
The encoded protein belongs to the killer cell lectin-like receptor family (NKG2 family), a group of transmembrane proteins preferentially expressed in NK cells.
This family is characterized by type II membrane orientation and a C-type lectin domain.
NKG2A forms a complex with KLRD1/CD94 and is implicated in the recognition of MHC class I HLA-E molecules in NK cells.
Genes of the NKG2 family form a receptor gene cluster on chromosome 12.
Four alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding two distinct isoforms have been observed.
