Target Information

The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also found in bone marrow and the immune system. These arise from the long MBP gene, also known as Golli-MBP, which includes three additional upstream exons.
Alternative splicing from Golli and MBP transcription start sites produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts and gene products:

• Golli-MBP transcripts: contain unique Golli exons spliced in-frame with MBP exons, encoding hybrid proteins with N-terminal Golli and MBP sequences.
• Classic MBP transcripts: contain only MBP exons, producing the well-characterized myelin basic proteins.

This gene structure is conserved among species, suggesting that MBP is an integral part of the Golli transcription unit, important for gene regulation and function.
