Target Information
Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine to catecholamines, including dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. This O-methylation is one of the major degradative pathways of catecholamine neurotransmitters. COMT also plays a key role in the metabolism of catechol drugs used in the treatment of hypertension, asthma, and Parkinson's disease.
COMT exists in two forms in tissues: a soluble form (S-COMT) and a membrane-bound form (MB-COMT), differing in their N-terminal regions. Several transcript variants are generated by alternative translation initiation sites and promoters.
