Target Information
ALDH1A1 belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family of proteins. It is the second enzyme in the major oxidative pathway of alcohol metabolism. Two major liver isoforms, cytosolic and mitochondrial, differ in electrophoretic mobility, kinetic properties, and subcellular localization. Most Caucasians have both isoforms, while about 50% of Orientals have only the cytosolic isoform, lacking the mitochondrial one. This may relate to a higher frequency of acute alcohol intoxication among Orientals.
