Target Information
The phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of proteins on serine and threonine residues is an essential regulatory mechanism for numerous cellular functions in eukaryotes, including cell division, homeostasis, and apoptosis.
TSSK6 (Testis-specific serine kinase 6), also known as SSTK, TSSK4, FKSG82, or CT72, is a 273 amino acid protein containing a protein kinase domain and belonging to the Ser/Thr protein kinase family.
It is highly expressed in testis and to a lesser extent in ovary, colon, thymus, small intestine, and spleen. TSSK6 catalyzes ATP-dependent phosphorylation of proteins involved in sperm production and chromatin remodeling, using magnesium as a cofactor.
It plays a critical role in sperm development, function, and DNA condensation. Mutations in the TSSK6 gene are associated with male infertility characterized by low sperm count and decreased sperm motility.
