Target Information

This gene is one of seven beta-1,4-galactosyltransferase (beta4GalT) genes. They encode type II membrane-bound glycoproteins that transfer galactose in a β1,4 linkage to acceptor sugars such as GlcNAc, Glc, and Xyl. Each beta4GalT plays a distinct role in the biosynthesis of glycoconjugates and saccharide structures.
Beta4GalT5, previously known as B4GALT4, functions as a type II membrane protein localized to the Golgi apparatus, with an N-terminal hydrophobic signal sequence acting as a transmembrane anchor. The enzyme’s precise biological function remains unclear, but it is grouped with beta4GalT6 based on sequence similarity.
