Target Information

Collagens are highly conserved and characterized by an uninterrupted Glycine-X-Y triplet repeat.

• Col1: Found in most connective tissues; mutations cause osteogenesis imperfecta, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, idiopathic osteoporosis.
• Col2: Found in cartilage and vitreous humor; mutations associated with achondrogenesis, chondrodysplasia, familial osteoarthritis, SED congenita, Kniest dysplasia.
• Col3: Found in extensible connective tissues (skin, lung, vascular system); mutations linked to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV and arterial aneurysms.
• Col4: Major constituent of basement membranes; composed of alpha 1 IV and alpha 2 IV chains in 2:1 ratio. Useful for detecting basement membrane loss in carcinomas.
• Col5: Regulates assembly of fibers composed of Col1 and Col5; mutations associated with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
