Target Information
This gene belongs to the GPI family, encoding multifunctional phosphoglucose isomerase proteins involved in energy pathways.
The protein is a dimeric enzyme catalyzing the reversible isomerization of glucose-6-phosphate and fructose-6-phosphate.
It functions both intracellularly (in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis) and extracellularly (as a neurotrophic factor for spinal and sensory neurons).
Defects in this gene can cause nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia and, in severe cases, hydrops fetalis, neonatal death, and neurological impairment.
