Target Information
FGF2 (fibroblast growth factor basic) is a member of the FGF family that binds to high-affinity transmembrane receptors to regulate cell proliferation and tissue neovascularization.
It exists as five isoforms with distinct intracellular localizations and functions:
- 18 kDa isoform: cytosolic, acts via surface receptors
- 22, 22.5, 24, and 34 kDa isoforms: nuclear, may signal independently of receptors
Located on chromosome 4q in humans, FGF2 is involved in limb and nervous system development, wound healing, and tumor growth.
Different isoforms arise from alternative translation initiation at AUG and non-AUG codons, producing nuclear and cytosolic variants with distinct biological roles.
FGF2 dysfunction is associated with diseases such as Kaposi Sarcoma and corneal neovascularization.
