Target Information

The POMC gene encodes a polypeptide hormone precursor that undergoes extensive, tissue-specific, post-translational processing by prohormone convertases. It contains eight potential cleavage sites, which can yield up to ten biologically active peptides depending on tissue type and enzyme availability.
In the anterior pituitary, adrenocorticotrophin and β-lipotropin are the major end products, essential for steroidogenesis and adrenal maintenance. In other tissues such as hypothalamus, placenta, and epithelium, processing produces peptides involved in pain regulation, energy homeostasis, melanocyte stimulation, and immune modulation.
Mutations in this gene are associated with early-onset obesity, adrenal insufficiency, and red hair pigmentation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been described.
