Target Information
Escherichia coli (E. coli) are Gram-negative enteric bacteria that inhabit the human gut. Their presence in nature indicates human fecal contamination. Certain strains cause diseases such as urinary tract infections and neonatal meningitis. Infection with specific enterotoxigenic strains can result in severe intestinal diseases. E. coli are immunologically distinguished by serotyping based on three antigen types:
- Somatic (O) antigen: terminal sugars on the cell surface lipopolysaccharide
- Capsular (K) antigens
- Flagellar (H) antigens
