Arginine methylation is an irreversible post-translational modification implicated in RNA processing, trafficking, receptor-mediated signaling, and transcription.
At least three types of PRMT enzymes have been identified in mammalian cells, which regulate key proteins involved in nuclear function, cell cycle, signal transduction, apoptosis, and viral processes.
The mammalian PRMT family consists of seven members sharing two large domains of homology. Antibodies against all seven PRMT members have been developed.
