Ninein은 모 중심체의 부속 구조(subdistal appendages)에 존재하며, 중심체의 주변부(pericentriolar matrix)에 특이적으로 위치합니다.
이 단백질은 미세소관의 마이너스 말단 캡핑, 중심체 위치 조절, 단백질 고정 등에 관여할 수 있습니다.
최근 연구에 따르면, 중심체에서의 미세소관 핵형성과 고정은 Ninein 기능에 의해 연결된 독립적인 과정입니다.
인간 Ninein은 최소 5가지 이소폼을 가지며, 각각의 C-말단 도메인이 다릅니다.
Ninein에 대한 항체를 HeLa 세포에 미세주입하면 중심체 재형성 과정이 방해되어 중심체 물질이 세포질 전반에 분산될 수 있습니다.
