XDH는 퓨린의 산화 대사에 관여하는 몰리브덴 함유 하이드록실라아제 군에 속합니다. 이 효소는 호모다이머 형태로 존재하며, 가역적인 황화수소산화 또는 비가역적인 단백질 분해 변형에 의해 잔틴 산화효소(xanthine oxidase)로 전환될 수 있습니다. XDH 유전자의 결함은 잔틴뇨증(xanthinuria)을 유발하며, 성인 호흡곤란 증후군 및 인플루엔자 감염의 산소 대사 관련 기전에 관여할 수 있습니다.
