Target Information
Gap junctions are specialized structures on plasma membranes of contacting cells, consisting of transmembrane channels formed by connexins. Connexins vary by tissue and are classified by molecular mass or by sequence similarity into alpha and beta categories. CX43 is alpha-1, while CX32 and CX26 are beta-1 and beta-2, respectively. Connexins have four transmembrane, three intracellular, and two extracellular regions. Expression patterns differ among tissues and are developmentally regulated, including during embryo implantation.
