The MIPEP gene product performs the final step in processing nuclear-encoded proteins targeted to the mitochondrial matrix or inner membrane. It plays a key role in maturation of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS)-related proteins and may contribute to the effects of frataxin deficiency and Friedreich ataxia.
