Target Information
This gene belongs to the solute carrier family 2 (facilitated glucose transporter) family and encodes an insulin-regulated facilitative glucose transporter protein.
In the absence of insulin, this integral membrane protein is sequestered within muscle and adipose tissue cells. Upon insulin stimulation, it rapidly translocates to the cell surface to transport glucose across the membrane.
Mutations in this gene are associated with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).
