Neurofilaments are intermediate filament proteins found specifically in neurons, composed predominantly of three major proteins: NF-L, NF-M, and NF-H.
- NF-L (light chain) runs on SDS-PAGE at ~70 kDa.
- NF-H (heavy chain) runs at 180–220 kDa, varying by species.
These proteins play a key role in maintaining neuronal caliber, and their expression is tissue-specific and developmentally regulated.
