Target Information
This gene encodes an enzyme involved in catalyzing the conversion of angiotensin I into angiotensin II, a potent vasopressor and aldosterone-stimulating peptide that regulates blood pressure and fluid-electrolyte balance. The enzyme plays a key role in the renin-angiotensin system. Variations in this gene, including a 287 bp Alu repeat element, are associated with enzyme levels and cardiovascular conditions. Two major alternatively spliced variants encode the somatic and testicular isozymes, both active forms. Additional splice variants exist but are not fully characterized.
