Target Information
SMADs are members of the MAD-related family of molecules. These intracellular proteins are key components in the signaling pathways of serine/threonine kinase receptors of the TGF-beta superfamily.
SMADs are categorized as:
- Receptor-regulated SMADs (R-SMADs: SMAD1, 2, 5, 8, 9)
- Common-mediator SMAD (co-SMAD: SMAD4)
- Inhibitory SMADs (I-SMADs: SMAD6, 7)
SMAD1, 5, 8, and 9 share high homology, and antibodies may cross-react with these proteins. SMAD8 and SMAD9 are often used interchangeably in literature.
