Target Information

CD28 antigen is a 44 kDa disulfide-linked homodimeric T-cell specific surface glycoprotein. It is a cell adhesion molecule of the immunoglobulin superfamily, constitutively expressed on most peripheral blood T lymphocytes.
CD28 provides a critical costimulatory signal for T-cell activation by binding CD80 and CD86 on antigen-presenting cells. It prevents T cells from entering an anergic or apoptotic state.
In murine lymphoid organs and blood, all CD4+ and CD8+ T cells express CD28. In the thymus, CD28 expression is highest on immature CD3-, CD8+, and CD4+8+ cells, as well as CD4-8- cells expressing α/β and γ/δ TCR. Expression decreases two- to fourfold in mature thymocytes.
Diseases associated with CD28 dysfunction include mycosis fungoides and Sezary’s disease.
