Product Specific Information

The MFL3 monoclonal antibody reacts with mouse Fas (CD95) Ligand, a 40 kDa type II transmembrane glycoprotein. FasL is a TNF family member expressed by activated T cells. Interaction with its receptor CD95 induces Fas-mediated apoptosis. Human FasL can be cleaved by MMPs to form a 26 kDa soluble form; sensitivity of mouse FasL to MMPs is not reported.

Target Information

CD178 (Fas ligand, FasL) is a type-II membrane protein with an N-terminal cytoplasmic domain and a C-terminal extracellular domain. Its receptor, FasR, is a type-I membrane protein in the TNF/NGF receptor family. CD178 induces apoptosis upon FasR interaction and exists in both membrane-bound (45 kDa) and soluble (26 kDa) forms. The soluble form arises from metalloproteinase cleavage.

CD178 is expressed in activated T-lymphocytes, NK cells, and immune-privileged tissues (testis, eye). Expression also occurs in thymus, liver, ovary, lung, heart, and kidney. CD178-mediated apoptosis plays a key role in antiviral immune responses and immune regulation. Altered CD178 levels are associated with inflammatory diseases and atherosclerosis. The Fas/CD178 system is implicated in AIDS, hepatitis, and cancer.
