Blood-group antigens are molecules formed by sequential addition of saccharides to carbohydrate side chains of lipids and proteins found on erythrocytes and certain epithelial cells.
A, B, and H antigens undergo modulation during malignant transformation.
They are mucin-type carbohydrate determinants detected on erythrocytes, epithelial cells, and in secretions.
Sixteen genetically and biosynthetically distinct but interrelated specificities belong to this group, including A, B, H, Lewis A, Lewis B, Lewis X, Lewis Y, and precursor type 1 chain antigens.
