Target Information
Adenylate kinase is an enzyme that regulates the adenine nucleotide composition within a cell by catalyzing the reversible transfer of phosphate groups among adenine nucleotides. Three isozymes of adenylate kinase have been identified in vertebrates: AK1, AK2, and AK3.
- AK1: Found in the cytosol of skeletal muscle, brain, and erythrocytes
- AK2 / AK3: Found in the mitochondria of other tissues including liver and heart
AK1 has been associated with a rare genetic disorder causing nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia due to mutations in the AK1 gene that reduce the enzyme’s catalytic activity.
