Target Information

Eukaryotes produce three distinct classes of RNA polymerase: Pol I, II, and III.

  • Pol I transcribes rRNA genes for the precursor of 28S, 18S, and 5.8S ribosomal RNAs.
  • Pol II transcribes protein-coding genes into mRNA and snRNA genes into snRNAs that influence RNA processing.
  • Pol III transcribes 5S rRNA and all tRNA genes.

Each RNA polymerase complex consists of 9–15 polypeptides, with RPB6 and RPB8 subunits shared by all three polymerases.
