Target Information
The inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) family of proteins regulates programmed cell death triggered by various stimuli. All IAPs have at least one baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) motif that is essential for their anti-apoptotic activity.
Recently, a novel human inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) family member termed Livin (ML-IAP) has been identified, containing a single BIR domain and a COOH-terminal RING finger domain.
The Livin gene has two splicing variants encoding 298 and 280 amino acids, both containing a BIR and RING domain. Both isoforms inhibit TNFα-induced apoptosis in Jurkat cells.
Livin expression is low in adult tissues but relatively high in developmental tissues and many cancer cells.
