Target Information
The protein encoded by the ABCG5 gene belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily, which transports various molecules across cellular membranes.
ABCG5 is part of the White subfamily and functions as a half-transporter that limits intestinal absorption and promotes biliary excretion of sterols.
It is expressed in the liver, colon, and intestine. The gene is located on chromosome 2, arranged head-to-head with ABCG8.
Mutations in ABCG5 can lead to sterol accumulation and atherosclerosis, and have been observed in patients with sitosterolemia.
