Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a membrane protein similar to MHC class I-type proteins and associates with beta2-microglobulin. It is believed to regulate iron absorption by modulating the interaction between the transferrin receptor and transferrin.
Mutations in this gene cause hereditary haemochromatosis, a recessive genetic disorder associated with iron overload.
At least nine alternatively spliced variants have been described, with additional variants identified but not fully characterized.
