HSV는 헤르페스 바이러스 과(Herpesviridae)에 속하는 바이러스로, Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1, HSV-2)는 인간에게 널리 감염되는 바이러스입니다. 각각 Human herpes virus 1 및 2 (HHV-1, HHV-2)로도 알려져 있으며, HSV-1은 주로 구강 헤르페스를, HSV-2는 생식기 헤르페스를 유발합니다. 감염된 개인이 바이러스를 배출할 때 전파될 수 있습니다. 헤르페스 바이러스의 비리온 형태는 비교적 큰 이중 가닥 선형 DNA 게놈을 캡시드에 싸서 바이러스 외피로 둘러싸인 구조를 가집니다. HSV의 다양한 균주는 약 70개 이상의 open reading frame (ORF)을 가지고 있으며, Alzheimer’s disease와의 연관성도 보고된 바 있습니다.
