Target Information
The PKC family of serine/threonine kinases, including PRKCA (PKC alpha), is activated intracellularly by signal transduction pathways. In humans, at least 12 different PKC polypeptides have been identified, differing in structure, localization, and substrate specificity. Conventional PKC family members (alpha, beta I, beta II, gamma) are Ca²⁺- and phospholipid-dependent. PKC proteins phosphorylate diverse targets and are key mediators in cellular signaling pathways. They also serve as receptors for phorbol esters, which are tumor promoters. PKC alpha plays roles in cell adhesion, transformation, cycle regulation, and volume control. Mouse knockout studies suggest involvement in cardiac contractility and Ca²⁺ handling in myocytes.
