Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where the ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA, which is present in prokaryotic ribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ greatly among species in sequence and biochemical properties, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPS11 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein with high sequence similarity to ribosomal protein S11P family members. A pseudogene corresponding to this gene is located on chromosome 20. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
