Target Information

Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein composed of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). LF is present in external fluids such as milk and mucosal secretions and forms a major component of neutrophil secondary granules.

It exhibits diverse biological functions including:

  • Regulation of iron homeostasis
  • Host defense against microbial infections
  • Anti-inflammatory activity
  • Control of cellular growth and differentiation
  • Protection against cancer development and metastasis

LTF acts as a first-line defense against microbes by binding and removing Fe³⁺ from the environment. It also shows bactericidal and proteolytic activities, cleaving arginine-rich sequences in microbial proteins. Three isoforms (LTF-α, LTF-β, LTF-γ) have been identified, and LTF receptors are expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and certain bacteria.
