Target Information
This gene encodes a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, belonging to a superfamily of ligand-gated ion channels involved in rapid synaptic signal transmission. These pentameric receptors bind acetylcholine, triggering conformational changes that open an ion channel across the plasma membrane. The protein interacts with either nAChR beta-2 or beta-4 subunits to form functional receptors. Mutations in this gene are associated with nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy type 1, and certain polymorphisms confer protection against nicotine addiction.
