Target Information
Peroxin 3 (PEX3), also known as peroxisomal biogenesis factor 3 or TRG18, is a 373 amino acid multi-pass membrane protein localized to peroxisomes. It belongs to the Peroxin family and is expressed ubiquitously.
PEX3 interacts with Peroxin 19 and plays a critical role in peroxisome biosynthesis, membrane vesicle assembly, and maintenance of peroxisomal integrity.
It functions as a docking factor for Peroxin 19 and is essential for the import of peroxisomal proteins.
Defects in the PEX3 gene are associated with peroxisome biogenesis disorder complementation group 12 (PBD-CG12) and Zellweger syndrome (ZwS), both resulting from impaired peroxisomal protein import.
